Another - Yawn - Chainsaw Massacre Reboot

The original film - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - is a classic of the genre. Its direct sequels are pretty bad (although 2 has a gonzo likability about it). And Michael Bay's reboot (director by Marcus Nispel) wasn't horrible, just unnecessary and lazy. It's sequel was one of the worst, most pointless movies I've ever seen. That is, until I saw Texas Chainsaw (2013).

Does the world need another reboot of Leatherface and his cannibal clan? I guess; at least, that's what the people at Millennium Films think. This is from The Wrap:

Up-and-coming genre scribe Seth M. Sherwood has been hired to write a prequel to the original 1974 horror classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” titled simply “Leatherface,” an individual familiar with the Millennium Films project has told TheWrap.

Official plot details are being kept under wraps, though the new film is expected to serve as an origin story that follows Leatherface's early years in the 1970s.

No director has been attached to the film yet.

While setting it in the Seventies is a good move, one really has to say..."Enough is enough!" Everything that could be done with this story has been done. We have seven Chainsaw movies. They range from gritty survival horror (the original) to gruesome dark comedies (2 and Next Generation) to the R. Lee Ermey show (The Beginning). Making this an origin story, another reboot, probably means another warped family satire with heapings of gore piled on top, AT BEST. At worst, we'll get a pointless exercise in killing attractive c-list actors and name-checking better films.

Hollywood needs to stop strip-mining its past.
